Company: Umami Bioworks

About the job

UMAMI BIOWORKS is looking for a curious, detail-oriented Grants Intern to support our grant function as we scale. This is a hands-on role where you'll work directly with our grants team, getting real exposure to the full grants process — from researching opportunities to supporting drafting of proposals. It's an ideal role for someone early in their career who wants to develop a strong foundation in grant writing, science communication, and project coordination within an ambitious food tech company.

Requirements

Experience & Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in a relevant field — biology, chemistry, engineering, business, science communication, or similar
  • Some exposure to scientific or technical writing (coursework, research projects, or prior experience) is beneficial
  • Familiarity with grant processes or research funding is a bonus, but not required — we'll teach you

Skills

  • Strong written communication — You write clearly and concisely, and you're willing to redraft until it's right.
  • Research skills — Comfortable conducting desk research, synthesising information from multiple sources, and presenting findings in a structured way.
  • Attention to detail — Accurate, thorough, and careful — especially when working with deadlines, eligibility requirements, and compliance documents.
  • Collaborative — A team player who communicates well and is comfortable asking questions.
  • Genuine interest in the space — Curiosity about food innovation, biotech, or sustainability is a real plus.

Desired Skills and Experience
What We're Looking For Grant writing expertise — Proven track record writing and managing grants through the full lifecycle, from identification to post-award reporting. Scientific comprehension — Able to understand and accurately represent complex technical content; comfortable working directly with scientists and engineers. Commercial awareness — Understands how to frame innovation in terms of market opportunity, customer need, and business value — not just scientific merit. Communication & writing — Exceptional written communication. You write with clarity, precision, and persuasion, and can adapt your voice to different funders and formats. Project & time management — Skilled at managing multiple proposals simultaneously across different agencies and timelines, with minimal oversight. Collaborative working — A team player who can pull together inputs from across the business and keep stakeholders aligned and on schedule. Research skills — Able to map a funding landscape, assess the competitive field, and synthesise background information to strengthen proposals.

The candidate

  • Grant Research & Landscape Mapping Monitor and research global grant opportunities. Summarise key eligibility criteria, deadlines, and strategic fit to help prioritize the pipeline.
  • Proposal Support Assist in drafting and editing sections of grant proposals — including background research, literature reviews, and supporting narratives. Help ensure proposals are accurate, well-structured, and submitted on time.
  • Science & Market Research Conduct desk research to support proposals — mapping the competitive landscape, identifying relevant data, and summarising current developments in cultivated seafood and adjacent fields.
  • Post-Award Administration Support grant record-keeping, track reporting deadlines, and help prepare progress updates and compliance documentation for active awards.
  • Stakeholder & Partner Research Maintain a list of potential academic and industry collaborators that could strengthen future grant applications.
